Truth. By definition, it is “that which is true or in accordance with fact or reality”. Therefore, it seems that by this definition, it is quite clear that if truth is based on fact it is more concrete. Fact is fact. It is black or white; high or low; hot or cold. With fact, there is no question. Reality on the other hand, is in the eye of the beholder. I remember being taught that there are two sides to every story and in the middle lies the truth.
Our world has become a world built on deception and lies. People, leaders, states, countries, friends and family are all guilty of attacking each other because their beliefs are different. Their reality is different. Sometimes they see what they believe to be true but not the truth that is fact. Lying has become acceptable as long as the end result is fruitful to the untruth.
As a mother, my most important lesson to my children was that there was nothing more sacred, other than God, than the truth. To this day, as young adults, they tell their friends that they were too afraid to lie. The reasoning behind this fear was that they knew they would get in more trouble for lying than the action itself. If only, our world as a whole, could learn that lesson.
During this time of unrest in our world, country, and state, remember to seek for the truth. Not another’s perception of truth. Be compassionate and accepting of others’ beliefs. Do not persecute those whose views are different than yours. You will not find truth in someone else’s words, deeds, or perceptions. Truth is in YOUR heart. Truth is in YOUR faith. Truth is in YOUR God.
Lord, who may dwell in your sanctuary?
Who may live on your holy hill?
He whose walk is blameless and who does what is righteous,
who speaks the truth from his heart and has no slander on his tongue,
who does his neighbor no wrong and casts no slur on his fellow man,
who despises a vile man but honors those who fear the Lord,
who keeps his oath even when it hurts,
who lends his money without usury and does not accept a bribe against the innocent.
He who does these things will never be shaken.
~Psalm 15~
